When I first saw it, I instantly fell in love with the worn nature of the light wood finish. I liked the clean, straight lines of the arms contrasting the playful character of the top. My style has evolved over the years, but this bench has remained one of my favorites from the beginning. I can't say that about a lot of other things we've had over the years.

It used to be a bed frame. Someone cut the foot board in half and created arms for the headboard. Quite clever.

The suitcases beneath have also been with us from the beginning of our marriage. I found them at a garage sale. They have definitely lived up to their intended use. They've likely traveled farther with us than with their previous owners. Presently they hold my stash of beloved interior design magazines.

The bench and suitcases rest comfortably in the corner of our living room now. Seems fitting for them to stay together I think.

*love* it...sigh...if i could only find a bench and suitcases like that...beautiful!!

ReplyDeleteRie your bench and your suitcases are just beautiful, and even more so because they hold such special memories and sentiment for you. They look perfect in your lovely living room. Thank you for sharing more of your beautiful home Rie. ~ Tina x

ReplyDeleterie.....the bench is just beautiful! i love how its tucked right in with the rest of the family room :)
ReplyDeleteHi Rie! This is such a pretty picture with the basket and the suitcases. The bench is GORGEOUS! I'd love the find a pretty bed and make my husband make this for me! :) I love that you still love it and cherish it still today. Your family room is so cozy looking - is that paneling on the lower part of the walls? I'm going to steal your idea and put plants in my crocks....thanks!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see more!

ReplyDeleteHi Rie,
ReplyDeleteI found you over at Dreamy Whites. So glad I did. Those suitcases and bench are beautiful in your living room! I posted awhile back about some vintage things I've picked up over the years. (vintage Monday) I wanted to show different items either once a week or a month. I would love to link up with you or take turns hosting a party. Let me know if you would be interested!
What a lovely piece! I love the wicker basket and the wire basket next to them too.
ReplyDeleteRie your right about the bench and the suitcases going together. I think we all have a piece that has been with us for a long time and its great to hear where they came from and their meanings. I worked in the city and needed a change. So I threw my job in and took a temporary position at a flower farm in the country. What a nice change to smell fresh air as apposed to smog and car fumes. Anyway my point is that along the path I travelled to the flower farm I passed another farm that had lots of bric a brac in the paddock. One day I finally plucked up the courage to ask if he had any pieces for sale. I found the most gorgeous cedar chest of drawers for $20 they have been with me ever since and were my very first purchase some 21 years ago. Have a great day. Sandy x
ReplyDeleteOh I love them all and you are right, they make a good team together. It is so nice to think that it was important to someone to cut down a favourite bed and make it into a bench instead of throwing it away. Re purposing vintage style!
ReplyDeleteness xx
I just love the bench!! I wish i could find one just like it...Kathy
ReplyDeleteA beautiful marriage of pieces! Your still drips with stories and history...love it!

I adore that bench!~ It sure is a keeper and I can see why. I still have our very first TV stand we bought, it was actually a chine dresser, and we used it as a TV stand...it is an awesome piece but we have no place for it anymore, it sits in my oldest boys closet just waiting for the perfect day to come back out:)
ReplyDeleteThat bench is definitely a keeper, you don't see pieces like that very often anymore and if you do, you have to give a kidney to pay for it...LOL! So enjoying your blog. Stop by sometime.
ReplyDeleteLeAnn:)
What a clever way to use an old headboard. I can see why you still love it - it is a beautiful bench.
