1. Remove lid to a gallon sized can of white stain
2. Balance lidless can of white stain on the edge of the bathtub
3. Knock over can of white stain onto freshly laid wood flooring
4. Use spackle knife to scrape puddles of white stain back into can
5. Vigorously rub paper towels over entire area
6. Think positive thoughts. Perhaps you have just discovered a new inventive whitewash application.
7. Realize that no, you have not.
8. Retrieve the belt sander.

Ooops! Hubs did that years ago on purpose with oil based paint on our wood floors. It was way too much paint and took days to dry. What was he thinking?? Ha!

You are hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry about the mis-hap and I can sort of relate.
ReplyDeleteWe rented a drum sander to do our floors and I sanded right over the cord! Sparks were flying everythwhere and I was screaming hysterically, "help!" but my husband couldn't hear me because he had the edger going in the other room!!! Thankfully I was able to yank the cord out of the outlet!!
No worries...you'll fix it! And it will look GREAT:)

Ohhhhh, nooooo! I kinda know how you feel! I have always worried about doing the same thing myself . . . and then one day it happened . . . with a full gallon! After my heart nearly stopped, I realized none of it had escaped the bounds of the plastic I had put down . . . so no carpet had to be replaced. But, it still took forever to get it cleaned up and now I am extra paranoid it will happen again! It's going to look fabulous when you're done!

I've always wished for whitewashed floors but it's a bit tough in a New York City apartment ;) But, I will share with you my favorite quote about them: "Paint your floors white. You'll feel Emma Peel-ish. You'll feel carefree. You'll feel thinner than you actually are. - Jonathan Adler" Isn't it so very true? White floors make me feel like ballroom dancing xx

ReplyDeleteI hate that this happened to you, but I am so relieved that I'm not the only one that these things happen to. For some unknown reason we tend to think bloggers are perfect. That everything always goes right and that they always have picture perfect homes with perfect families. It is always so refreshing to also see they are REAL, too. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteSo sorry! Thankfully it looks just like part of the floor. I too dreamed of white washed wood floors and we laid the entire floor, white washed away and then sealed it - with the wrong kind of sealer which promptly ate up some of the finish and turned the wood yellow...Enter two sanders and one not so happy hubby. He felt even better when I managed to burn up one sander all on my own :) In the end our floor turned out amazing though slightly different than we had originally planned. When people ask how we got the finish like that we just smile and say, "we don't recommend it". Best wishes to you on your floor.
