Our Front Door (finally)

frontdoor1

If you remember, our new front door was the first find for our new farmhouse.  We bought it off of craigslist for $100 before we even closed on the house.  Here it is before:

frontdoor4

I originally painted it “Laughing Eyes” (by Ace):

But once installed, it still looked too blue.   I knew I wanted to paint the porch ceiling blue and Laughing Eyes was not giving me enough contrast.  Here is our ceiling in the process of being painted (not close to finished):

In the end, I decided upon Coventry Gray (Benjamin Moore) for the front door color and I’m happy with it:

frontdoor3

It took us until now to post pictures because it took us 6 months to finish the project.  (and it’s still not even done… see the unpainted door jam?)  Since one thing leads to another in this renovation process… it wasn’t just a matter of swapping the new door for the old.  Oh no.  Since it was a different size, there was gaping where the siding met the new door, which required us to change the siding.  We replaced the aluminum siding with Hardiplank and painted it Cottage White (Behr).

We could only afford to replace half of the siding of the house (it wasn’t in the plans after all), so currently we are sporting a two-tone look.  The top half is still white aluminum. I’m hoping the neighbors don’t think it’s for keeps.  At least from the middle down, the house is lookin’ pretty.

The galvanized lights are from Lowes.  The super simple Swedish wreath is from Ikea.  Doormat is from World Market.  The dog is not for sale.  :)

  7. Rie- It looks very nice. I love the gray color-probably better than the blue. I am so glad that you are getting things done. It does seem to take forever when you are rehabbing and trying to live there too. Happy pre-Christmas! xo Diana

  10. Hi Rie! I think your blog is my favorite out of all the blogs I read. I love the way you decorate and I love your large family. My husband and I hope to build or remodel a home someday, so I love getting ideas. Keep up the good work. I sure it must be hard to live in the house as you remodel, but then that is part of the adventure too.

  14. Looks beautiful but I what I really appreciated was your comment on what your neighbors think of the siding being different. My husband and I are also restoring an old farmhouse and can only afford to remove the aluminum siding small areas at a time. I too want to put out a sign that says "this is a work in progress, not permanent". It was nice to hear that someone else thinks the same way! Good luck with your renovating! What you have done so far is amazing!

  22. I love your front door! I have been wanting to paint our front door a grey but just haven't found the right color...so it has remained the color it was when we bought the house a grey/blue. I think the color you used just might be perfect!

  25. I love the color you chose and all the accessories! Trying to work with two different blues is hard. I just had the same problem in my bathroom, where I painted the ceiling blue. Everything else ended up being white because it just wasn't coming together! I can also relate to the "6 month" project. It took us that long to complete our little guest bath makeover. :)

  26. That IS THE MOST PERFECT COLOR that the door could possibly be! I'm making note of that color in my "great color" files... Wow!

  32. Beautiful colors, love the simple galvanized lamps from Lowe's..they look like the expensive ones Barn Lights sells but I'm sure Lowe's had it for a fraction of Barn Light's prices. Is the crock pot and bench used as just props for this picture?

  33. Oh Rie, your door is as gorgeus as everything un your life, thank you for sharing!!!

  34. Anonymous,
The crock and bench are permanent props. They are there to stay. The lights were very inexpensive!

I just posted about my little Christmas decoration this year, would love for you to stop by if you have a chance!

When you have a minuteI would like to know how the new flooring is faring in your family life. What about cleaning? How is it holding up? Do you see footprints? What about pets? Is it sticking well? Does it still have you in "LOVE"?

We are thinking of doing it in the kitchen and breezeway. But I have a dog with messy feet in the winter. Would love your opinion. Perhaps a quick post for an update.

Know you are busy. Would appreciate it.

  47. BEAUTIFUL... I sold a door on craigs list this summer and it looked so much like this.. I had to do a double take. It was for a home not yet built.. I hope they follow your blog and see how beautiful yours turned out. Now Im sorry I sold it. I was told it was from a 100 year old farm house...
